It has been some days now that I noticed my fuel door was wobbly. Especially when it was not fully open. So I tried to fix it myself saving my time and money from going to the dealer.
Following the workshop manual (remove the fuel cap) I removed the "collecting tray":
It was immediately easy to recognize the source of the problem: the long plastic rod that ensures the fuel door stays in place and rotates was not fully inserted. Or rather it was out of its proper position. Why did this happen? I have no clue…
By pushing slightly from the bottom and by using long nose pliers I managed easily to remove the rod. The door was detached from the collecting tray and so did the metal spring (5K6 809 931 — see number 3 here). This sring is responsible for the small resistance in opening the fuel door.
The whole part was incredibly dirty on its back. The draining hose although it was a bit dirty on the inside it was not blocked at all. Before fixing any problem I started cleaning everything. I also blew some pressurized air in the hose to remove as much dirt and ensure that it perorms as it should.
To place back the rod into its correct place was very easy but then I realized that the fuel door was moving without any effort. Obviously the spring was not in place. It took me a while to manage to find a way to put it back.
With the metal spring in place I installed again the collecting tray only to find that the metal spring got out of place again…So I started again and managed to put it again in place.
Finally everything was OK: the door was not wobbly at all and some resistance in fuel door movement was gained (it seems that the metal spring is a bit bent and the feeling is not as from the factory).
Being happy of having corrected the fuel door I decided to perform a VCDS scan to see if any problems came up since last time (last time I scanned the car was in late May with 63238km and now I have 66902). Then the "old familiar" error appeared again 120 km before today:

It seems that with VW you can never sit on your ass. Rather you have to fix issues
